Message by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

This year´s World Tourism Day highlights the global potential of tourism for socio-economic development.  With more than one billion international tourists now traveling the world each year, tourism has become a powerful and transformative force that is making a genuine difference in the lives of millions of people.

The potential of tourism for sustainable development is considerable.  As one of the world’s leading employment sectors, tourism provides important livelihood opportunities, helping to alleviate poverty and drive inclusive development.
As tourism revolves around encounters between different peoples, the sector can foster multicultural understanding and raise awareness on the need to preserve cultural and natural heritage.

As the world prepares to adopt a new sustainable development agenda, tourism should be recognized for its ability to create jobs, promote local culture and products and champion the conservation and sustainable use of marine and terrestrial habitats.

Let us work together to maximize the immense potential of tourism to drive inclusive economic growth, protect the environment and promote sustainable development and a life of dignity for all.

Message by UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai

This year´s World Tourism Day is an opportunity to celebrate the transformative potential of one billion tourists.

Today, more than one billion tourists travel to an international destination every year. These billion tourists have made tourism a leading economic sector, contributing 10% of global GDP and 6% of the world´s total exports.

Yet these big numbers represent more than just economic strength - they reflect tourism´s vast potential and increasing capacity to address some of the world´s most pressing challenges, including socio-economic growth, inclusive development and environmental preservation.

As a sector behind as many as one in eleven jobs worldwide, tourism is a valuable source of livelihood for millions of people. Built around the millions of cross-cultural encounters happening every day in different corners of the world, tourism is also a gateway to greater understanding of the world beyond our borders, the first step in building peace and between communities and nations.

Tourism is more than just about reaching a destination - tourism has a global reach. Every time we travel, we become part of a global movement that has the power to drive positive change for our planet and all people.

This 27th of September, let us celebrate the value of the “One Billion Tourists” and work together in making tourism a true instrument of opportunity and inclusion. Let us all turn the power of one billion into a genuine force for good.

Geographical Indications

Geographic features in Ben Tre
Ben Tre, one of the 13 provinces in the Mekong Delta, 87 km west of Ho Chi Minh City. The area is 2315.01 km2. Adjacent to Ben Tree is Tien Giang province to the North, Vinh Long and Tra Vinh province to the West and South, and the East Sea to the East. There are four major rivers: Tien, Ba Lai, Ham Luong, Co Chien embracing Ben Tre forming the entire area from the entire area form the three major islands: An Hoa isle, Bao isle and Minh isle.
Ben Tre land is one of the rapidly encroaching forms of the Mekong Delta in the last thousand years. The largest island is at the mouth of the Mekong river, formed from many other smaller islands due to sedimentation at Tien river estuary. It is true that Tien river’s branches which previously divided the entire area into many smaller parts has gradually been filled by sediment growing, making up the land of Ben Tre today.

Ben Tre has a triangle shape, with the bottom edge stretching 65 km adjacent to the East Sea. Ben Tre terrain is relatively flat, the average height of 1-2 m above sea level. It is rather lower in comparison with other areas of average height of just 3-5 m. Ben Tre is surrounded by approximately 6,000 km-long rivers, very convenient for river transportation and agricultural development.

Ben Tre islets contain four types of soil. They are sand, alluvial soil, soil acidity and salinity. In particular, saline soil occupy the largest area of 43.11%, sandy soil is mainly mounds accounted for the lowest 6.4% of the province.

Ben Tre is in tropical monsoon climates, with average annual temperatures of 260C - 270C. Although adjacent to the East Sea, Ben Tre is less affected by storms, because it is out of the lower latitudes. Ben Tre is influenced by the northeast and southwest monsoon, and has two distinct seasons. The annual average rainfall is 1,250 mm – 1,500 mm.

The formation of the coconut land
In a natural terrain of thick forests, swamps full of wild beasts, 300 year ago the inhabitants who first came to Ben Tre from the central settled their lives in mounds near the sea to avoid predators and floods. They have promoted the production experience right here, cutting trees, and clearing forest for agriculture. Eventually they turned the forest into villages and immense coconut plantations, and lush orchards.
From ancient times until now, coconuts are perennial crops that take an important role in the cropping systems of Ben Tre. Coconut trees and coconut processing production made a face of the economy, culture, society, a particular environment on the lower Mekong region. The look was constantly modified and attached to the history of the development of the coconut Ben Tre.

The country has about 200,000ha of coconut trees. Ben Tre is the leading province on both – the coco-tree area of 65.000ha and the output of 540 million fruits / year. Ben Tre is the islet cluster, located down to the end of the country, fully getting alluvium of the Mekong River before flowing into the sea. Thanks to this, coco-trees in Ben Tre are better growing and making more productivity than in the other areas. The three districts of largest coco-tree areas are Giong Trom, Chau Thanh, and previous Mo Cay, now called Southern and Northern Mo Cay.

Within two centuries, the wild land full of wild animals on the islands of the downstream Mekong River has become the production center of coconuts, and other delicious fruits famous throughout the country.

Coconuts in Horticultural culture

According to the writer Son Nam, also a Vietnamese culturist, the west of Southern of Vietnam is the birthplace of the "horticultural culture". Probably, here has been the homeland of Vietnamese horticulture and far from more prosperous urbanized places so called horticultural region.

A garden hereby mentioned is an orchard, and no where in the country with orchards as much as the South. In the species of fruit trees in the South, perhaps the one that supplies fruit for many years and has tight the relationship to the people of this land probably is coconuts.

It's hard to explain whether coconuts or people came first in this land. But what the coconuts marked on the culture of the people here have demonstrated that coconut tree's presence were a long time ago, and therefore, it has very special role in the native culture.

People of the Southern for generations, would live in harmony with nature. At the very land of rivers and canals mixing of freshwater, brackish water, and seawater, the people here had known how to plant coconut trees to prevent erosion and salinity to protect rice, crops or other fruits. Coconut trees tied to land reclaiming footsteps and continuously attached to every countryside's practice.

The coconut bridge is the beloved image of the South. In the land of great deal of rivers and canals carrying heavy silt, coconut tree trunks have been a "hyphen" between the rural neighbor villages. Coconut trees supply soft healthy drink, and coconut tree trunks support footsteps of deeper affection and gratitude.

In addition, dried coconut leaves have been used to fire that almost households in the Mekong Delta have done. Besides, people would choose large old coconut leaves with stong stems to bundle into sweeping brooms that was called "coconut brooms". This brush together with straw brooms is probably the oldest type of brooms of the southern land.

Coconut torches were also beauty of humanistic .culture of the people behaving towards one another at the beginning of the reclaiming of the land and when missing the way late at night. In earlier days, coconut leaves were the decorative material for weddings in Southern countryside villages.

In Tet holidays, coconut is on display in the Five- fruit tray consisting of "custard-apple, coconut, papaya, mango, fig". Coconut is one of the five components of dreaming of human flourishing. In addition, in the three-day festival, almost household make coconut jam. Coconut jam with the green, white, red, gold colors looks very nice, making the atmosphere more bustling, the stories sweeter, hopes raised highly. Until today, coconut jam still retains that position.

And in most of the cakes that are offered to ancestors in death's anniversary, weddings, coconut would be present, they are glutinous rice cake, yellow-colored wedding pastry, green rice flake cake, coconut sticky rice....

And it would be a shortcoming if talking about the Southern without Vietnamese two-chord fiddle that were made of dried coconut shells. More evidences of a coconut tree to show its rooting deeply in the such Southern people's emotion. Speaking to the South, we should mention the "Cai luong". Speaking of "Cai luong", we should remind of Vietnamese two-chord fiddle. And reminding of the Vietnamese two-chord fiddle would remind us of coconut trees. As aresult, horticultural culture and coconuts have related much.
